In the latter part of the nineteenth century, West Alabama experienced an economic boom. The community now known as Buhl was established in a central location with its own lumber mill, railroad spur, and hotel. As the economy of Buhl flourished, citizens realized the need for a church.
In 1908 a dozen believers got together and started worshipping under a brush arbor, using logs as benches. From this humble beginning, Buhl Baptist has moved forward to where it is today. The church built its first structure in 1910 after purchasing the needed land. This building was demolished in 1934, and a smaller building was created using the same lumber. In 1953 a third structure replaced the small church, and Sunday School rooms were added. During a brief transition period, Buhl Baptist was without its own building but worshipped in Buhl School. This third building, dedicated in 1953, added a fellowship hall in 1977, and in 1983 added stained glass windows to the sanctuary and remodeled the Sunday School rooms in time for the 75th anniversary of the church in August.
In 1990 a long-time church member willed a donation that led to the construction of our Family Life Center, which was completed in 1991. Also, during the 1990’s, a choir was created, and a paid minister of music was called. In 1997, Buhl Baptist called its first full-time pastor, Bro. Alfred Banks. Bro. Alfred led the church to construct our current sanctuary, which was dedicated in January 2000.
Many changes have occurred since we first worshipped in our new sanctuary. The role of the choir was expanded, a youth pastor was called, and our children’s ministry flourished. New Sunday School rooms and restrooms were completed on the lower level in 2006. At Buhl Baptist’s Homecoming in August 2008, we celebrated our 100th anniversary.
Bro. Alfred Banks was the minister at Buhl Baptist from 1997 until his death in late 2020. Bro. Tim Patrick, led Buhl Baptist until January of 2024. Tyler Johnson currently serves as Lead Pastor.
Buhl Baptist faces a bright future. Since the recent creation of Sipsey Valley High School, many people are moving into the Buhl area. Buhl Baptist has a strong desire to reach people for Christ, to disciple believers in the faith, and to impact our community and the world.
